A country inside a country. No oceans. No seas. No coast line. The only country in the world that lies at an altitude of 1000m. Can you guess which country I am talking about? If you’re thinking Lesotho then you’re correct! I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know about this country until recently when searching for interesting places to go hiking in Africa. Lesotho popped up in this search given its amazing landscape. Aside from the wildlife and the great number of mountains, what struck me the most about Lesotho was its location. Landlocked, no sea and high altitude. Once known as Basutoland, Lesotho (meaning “the land where people speak Sesotho) is a country inside of South Africa. It was declared independent from the rule of the United Kingdom in 1966. It is also famous for its highland water project and diamond mining. Accessible mainly from South Africa, Lesotho has all the qualities for perfect hiking trips. My main goal visiting this country is hiking, to be able to enjoy its rich landscapes to the fullest. Maletsunyane Waterfall A heavenly fall 192m high, one of the highest single drop waterfall in the world. Legends says that the […]
Need an advice to choose your next destination ? Please let’s inspired by our three favourite Hiking in Lesotho Mountainous Lesotho is a hiker’s paradise. It is the highest country in the world, and with over 700 peaks it can be hard to choose which to tackle. The Sani Pass, which borders KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa is so notoriously difficult, most tour operators recommend taking a jeep to the top, where you can then meander on foot. Mokhotlong, and Sehlabathebe National Park, are also favourites. Maps are essential and can be purchased in Lesotho’s capital, Maseru. If you want to take time to savour memories, give yourself three or four days to explore each mountain and the towns around them. Surf in Pointe-Noire Pointe-Noire is the second city of the Republic of the Congo and a major sea port and tourist destination. It’s a paradise for surfers and bodyboard enthusiasts, but not for the faint-hearted or the inexperienced: the sea can be quite wild at times. Pointe Kounda and Côte Sauvage are two of the most popular beaches, but, if you have the chance, head to Kouilou – less than an hour’s drive out of town – to surf the […]
The Ha Kome Cave Village is situated at Pulane area in Berea district. The caves were a hideout for the Basia and one Bataung clans during the Lifaqane Wars and cannibalism. The cave is still inhabited by their descendants to this day. There are also faded San paintings in the cave which indicates that the San also occupied the cave some time prior to their arrival albeit briefly. The Kome Crafts and Information Office that is about 500 metres up the road from the caves houses locally-made crafts including crafts from Lesotho Mountain Crafts in Teyateyaneng, 21 km from the centre. You will also find a tuck shop and a small café at the centre. At the Kome Crafts and Information Centre you can have picnic and even strike up a barbecue/braai at one of its many stands. The helpful staff at the centre can help you organise pony treks around the Pulane area and even assist you with guided tours of the Kome Cave Village. Catering is available upon request. Camping is permitted but there aren’t any shower facilities. A high clearance vehicle is recommended if you driving down to the centre and sensible footwear for the the […]
