Home of Famed Morna singer Cesária Évora, Cape Verde rests off the Northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic ocean. The country is an archipelago made up of 10 volcanic islands and is one of 6 portuguese speaking countries in Africa. Nationals of any country can get a visa prior to or upon arrival although a number of countries, mostly in Africa, have visa exemptions.

Like most island nations, Cape Verde is known for its beaches, good weather, excellent seafood as well as its rich musical tradition which was born out of a mix of African, Portuguese and Brazilian influences. Travellers can hop between the islands by way of ferries or small planes.

To check out

  • The Pedra de Lume salt mines

Float inside the salt pans of this amazing geographic formation! Inside the crater of an extinct volcano, the salt lake formed from water seeping in from the Atlantic ocean. The pink and white hues of salt are a feast for the eyes and the minerals found here could rival your best spa treatments.

  • Pico do Fogo

This active volcano is the highest point of Cape Verde at almost 3km above see level. The most recent eruption occured in 2014 but don’t let that stop you from planning a hike and exploring the surrounding area. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, though many homes were destroyed in that eruptions, some residents still chose to stay in the place they have always  known as home.
