I was recently invited to a birthday breakfast at the African Pride Hotel at Melrose Arch. We spent the morning in the lap of luxury, devouring delicious and beautifully presented dishes until we couldn’t fit anymore. It’s an ideal location to spoil a loved one or take some time out with good company for a leisurely meal (that could last at least half a day).

The African Pride is well-known around Joburg for its buffet breakfast. The hotel is a lavishly indulgent illustration of African design style. Centrally located close to Sandton, and not too far from the CBD or the northern suburbs, Melrose Arch is a fairly new residential and commercial development that quickly has become one of the most popular spots around town. Besides luxury flats, hotels and a wide range of restaurants, Melrose Arch also provides ample opportunity to shop for clothes, home goods, art, antiques or just about anything else. It’s certainly on the upper end in terms of price, but there are also occasional street markets selling food, antiques and other goods.

On this special occasion we splurged for the breakfast at the African Pride. We started off with the savoury dishes: oysters, cured meat, scrambled eggs and too many different cheeses. This was followed by cupcakes, cookies, Turkish delight, croissants, scones with cream and jam and other little goodies piled high on a three-tier stand in the centre of the opulent dining room. All this was interspersed with cappuccinos and tea on demand, and the exceptional staff even cooked us pork sausages on request. Apparently omelettes and other eggs can also be specially ordered from the kitchen.

We must have sat there for at least three hours, requiring breaks in between courses before we could go back for more and make sure we tried all the delicious goodies. All in all a delightful morning, indulgent and relaxing. It’s especially well-suite for cold winter weekend mornings when you want breakfast cooked for you, but also need to get away from the frosty Highveld air. Snuggled on a corner couch next to the fire, the African Pride is an ideal spot.

Breakfast at the African Pride costs R240 per person and is available every day of the week. Melrose Arch is just off the M1 and Atholl-Oaklands Road.

The hotel is at 1 Melrose St, Johannesburg, 2196, the main road in the Melrose Arc development.
