[South Africa's Ambassador]

[Age : 25 years]
[Town of residence : Johannesburg]

My name is Wendy Trott, I am 25 years old and I live in the crazy city of Johannesburg in South Africa. I originally come from Cape Town which is arguably the most beautiful city in the world (just ask anyone who lives there) but what Joburg lacks in natural beauty it more than makes up for in creativity, culture, dynamism and diversity. I am an economic researcher who works on development policy in the labour market here. I only recently moved here and look forward to sharing my adventures as I discover this fascinating place!

The Top 5 Markets in Joburg

The Top 5 Markets in Joburg

South Africa /

I am a market aficionado. And after this past weekend I think I can safely say that I’ve been to every market in Joburg and tasted a fair share of the all the food they produce. After a year living in this crazy city I finally feel qualified enough to pick out my favourites and […]

Breakfast at the African Pride Hotel at Melrose Arch

Breakfast at the African Pride Hotel at Melrose Arch

South Africa /

I was recently invited to a birthday breakfast at the African Pride Hotel at Melrose Arch. We spent the morning in the lap of luxury, devouring delicious and beautifully presented dishes until we couldn’t fit anymore. It’s an ideal location to spoil a loved one or take some time out with good company for a […]

Workshop Newtown: African artistry at its best

Workshop Newtown: African artistry at its best

South Africa /

Newtown is probably THE up-and-coming neighbourhood in Johannesburg right now. Old factories and warehouses are being renovated into chic new blocks of flats, and clubs and restaurants are popping up everywhere. The venerable Museum of Africa calls it home, as does the Market Theatre, one of Joburg’s most prized pieces of cultural history, and the […]

V&A Waterfront: the elegance and beauty of Cape Town

V&A Waterfront: the elegance and beauty of Cape Town

South Africa /

Anyone who’s been to Cape Town will not hesitate to tell you the same thing: it is the most beautiful city on the planet. No doubt about it. Joburg, for all its grit and quirkiness, is charming for reasons other than its physical beauty. Cape Town, on the other hand, is the beautiful cheerleader who’s […]

Don’t be Afraid of the Big, Bad Fox

Don’t be Afraid of the Big, Bad Fox

South Africa / Southern Africa /

I like to think of Fox Street as the centre of town – the very middle of a massive and pulsating city that never actually stops to think about such things as where its core might be, but rather just keeps expanding and shifting and rushing around to envelop new and exciting areas. But the […]

To Learn about South Africa: Vilakazi Street, Soweto

To Learn about South Africa: Vilakazi Street, Soweto

South Africa / Southern Africa /

For many people, especially visitors to Johannesburg, Vilakazi Street is the epicentre of Soweto life. On the one hand this makes it one of the most lively and interesting places to visit, but on the other it also means it has very quickly become ‘tourist central.’ Even so, a visit to Vilakazi Street provides something […]

A Sunday Stroll through Maboneng

A Sunday Stroll through Maboneng

South Africa / Southern Africa /

Stepping in to the swirl of colour, spirit and motion that is the Maboneng Precinct is like arriving at an oasis in the middle of the desert. Johannesburg is, of course, no desert when it comes to beautiful and intriguing things to see and do, but the vibrancy of Maboneng could almost make one feel […]

Back to the Beginning: a visit to the Cradle of Humankind

Back to the Beginning: a visit to the Cradle of Humankind

South Africa / Southern Africa /

Despite what the history books often tell us, Africa’s human history goes back to more than 2 million years ago. There’s a lot that we don’t know yet about the time between then and the arrival of modern humans to regions all over the world. But there’s also a surprisingly large amount that we do […]
